Where We Work

Spreading a helping and transformative hand across Africa

Kwe Trust anchors its work in the Lake Region of Kenya, focusing initially on the counties of Busia, Siaya, Kisumu, Migori, and Homa Bay—collectively part of the Lake Region Economic Bloc (LREB). This region, rich in biodiversity, culture, and economic potential, remains one of the most historically marginalized in Kenya. Despite its strategic location around Lake Victoria—Africa’s largest freshwater lake—the region has often been sidelined in national development agendas due to historical political dynamics, systemic underinvestment, and regional disparities in policy implementation (Ombudo, 2019).1

Yet, the Lake Region is not a landscape of scarcity—it is one of immense opportunity. The lake itself is a lifeline for millions, offering untapped potential for blue economy innovation, sustainable agriculture, cross-border trade, eco-tourism, and climate resilience. By intentionally investing in this region, Kwe Trust is not only responding to urgent development gaps but also unlocking the transformative promise of the lake and its people.

Our work here is a deliberate act of reconnection—linking communities with resources, ecosystems with livelihoods, and history with a renewed future. As we strengthen our footprint in the Kenyan lake counties, we also look outward—toward the broader Lake Victoria Basin and the greater Lakes Region of Africa—where shared ecological systems, cultures, and aspirations provide fertile ground for cross-border collaboration, resilience, and sustainable growth.
